2021 Week 16 – Hey Y’all!

Kickstarter has some interesting projects.  I’ve backed several over the years and have mostly been happy with the end products (a few were failures and never got enough funded to get off the ground).  A new one caught my eye a few months ago called Tidbyt.  Tidbyt is a retro display kind of along the lines of a lite-brite that we all had as a kid.  It’s “connected” and can be customized to display all kinds of data from weather to stocks to transit timetables.  If all goes according to plan it will start shipping in September.  I’m looking forward to setting one up as a weather station and clock!

If you have pets do yourself a favor and locate at least 2 emergency pet hospitals that are open 24-hours and make sure this information is easily accessible. It’s also a good idea to know where they’re located so you know how to get there quickly.  We had a situation where one of our pets needed emergency care and the first place, closest to our house, had a 5-6 hour wait to see a Vet.  The parking lot was full of people sitting around on lawn chairs!  We identified an alternate emergency facility about 30-min away that advised they had a 1-2 hour wait.  It still took almost 6-hours to get the exam and necessary medications.  Current protocol requires you to call from the parking lot and stay there the entire time you’re waiting for triage and treatment.

And finally, I’ve really been enjoying the “Bless Your Rank” food review show on the “It’s a southern Thing” YouTube channel. It’s helping me get some ideas of snacks to try when I make a trip down south later this year!

Bonus Episode!

Road Food – Combos

I’m always up for a road trip and my snacks of choice always start with a Diet Mt. Dew and, more times than not, a bag of Combos by Mars, Incorporated.  I don’t know what it is about those little nuggets of flavor but I probably eat more of them than I should.

I used to only eat the Pepperoni Pizza Cracker flavor but one day, when the gas station was out of that particular flavor, I branched out and tried the Zesty Salsa Tortilla.  WOW, I’ve been missing out!  While looking online for ideas for this post I discovered a yet to be released flavor, Buffalo Blue Cheese Pretzel (limited edition according to Wikipedia), I’ll be on the lookout for those for sure!

In 2011 Combos® celebrated its official 40th anniversary.  I don’t remember these snacks being around when I was a kid.  Maybe it was a regional product?

I know what some of you are thinking…  That’s a really unhealthy snack.  I won’t argue with you but they are a lot better than my runner-up favorite snack the Pork Rind!

What’s your favorite road trip snack?

Rushing Waters Fisheries – Smoked Trout Spread

We stopped at Whole Foods yesterday looking for my wife’s favorite Gluten Free Teriyaki Sauce (San-J brand by the way) and took advantage of the many samples offered up.  One of which was a dare for my son who will pretty much eat anything.

We both sampled the Rushing Waters Fisheries Smoked Trout Spread and promptly threw a tub into the cart.  I’ve only had rainbow trout a few times & have always liked it.  This stuff hit the spot.  It’s a cream cheese/mayo based spread with little bits of smoked fish incorporated throughout.  It actually reminds me of a Smoked Cheddar Cheese Ball with a softer/smoother texture.

An 8oz tub sells for $6.99 and I’ll be surprised if it lasts through the labor day weekend.
